Austria is not spared from the cold currents either. Cold Arctic air is being directed far to the south between an area of high pressure off Norway and an area of low pressure over Russia, leading to unsettled weather conditions with snow, rain, and frosty temperatures.
The icy air from the Arctic is causing temperatures to drop into double figures in Scandinavia, Germany and Poland in particular. Austria is not spared either: the country’s eastern half has to brace itself for frosty days.
Snow down to low altitudes
Towards the weekend, an area of low pressure from the Mediterranean will play a decisive role. This will blow a cold, northerly wind over the eastern half of Austria. As things stand, this low-pressure system could cause snowfall from Vorarlberg to southern Styria. It cannot be ruled out that the snow will fall down to low altitudes. Larger amounts of fresh snow are possible in higher regions. So-called ice days are possible in Vienna and Graz in particular, with temperatures remaining below zero degrees all day. The country’s west will likely be less affected by the cold air.
First icy, then milder again
But the icy temperatures won’t last long. Milder air from the Mediterranean could flow into Central Europe as early as next week, warming the region and at least temporarily weakening the wintry weather.
